Wisconsin is known for lots of great things like excellent beer, sumptuous cheese and the Green Bay Packers. You can add golf to that list, too.
While it's not typically mentioned with other popular U.S. golf destinations like Florida and California, Wisconsin offers terrific golf experiences and a chance to play courses that serve as Major championship sites.
The next time you want to play a Major course, consider Wisconsin. Premier Golf has packages to these two exceptional venues:
Whistling Straits--Framed by miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, the Pete Dye designed Straits Course at The American Club Resort in Kohler, Wisconsin is a turf masterpiece with bluffs, imported fescue grasses, rolling dunes topped with tall grasses, stone bridges and amazing links-style bunkering. A walking-only course, The Straits replicates the seaside links courses of U.K. and Ireland. If you want even more authenticity, there are sheep grazing near the course (About 40 Scottish Blackface sheep wander the property). The PGA Championship has been staged three times at the Straits--2004 (Vijay Singh), 2010 (Martin Kaymer) and 2015 (Jason Day). Ranked #4 in Golfweek's 2015 Best Resort Courses, the Straits will host the Ryder Cup in 2020.
Erin Hills Golf Course--Site of the 2017 U.S. Open, Erin Hills is a unique layout set on rolling terrain formed by glaciers. Interestingly, the course is essentially surrounded by wetlands and a small river. Instead of moving lots of earth, the designers, Michael Hurdzan, Dana Fry and Ron Whitten, emphasized the natural contours of the property. It's a fun-to- play course for shorter hitters because the fast and firm fescue grass fairways offer lots of roll. Erin Hills ranked #8 in Golf Digest's 2015-2016 "America's 100 Greatest Public Courses." A traditional, walking-only layout, Erin Hills has an excellent professional caddie program, which enhances the overall experience. It's located 37 miles from downtown Milwaukee, 65 miles from Kohler and 114 miles from Chicago.
Both of the courses have luxurious accommodations options with easy access to golf.
